PAINFUL BREASTS: WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT - KATE, 30 YEARS OLD (PART 1)
I went to the doctor about three years ago for it. I think it [the pain] was sort of in general, but especially around my period, my breasts got very sore. When I took my bra off it hurt, I could feel hard areas in them especially around the sides. I also felt pain under my arms, in my armpits, because there are glands there too. When my arms were down I felt like there was something in there. And my nipples hurt. It was incredibly uncomfortable, an ache. More like a heaviness. I didn't know what it was, I thought, "I hope I don't have breast cancer." I was thinking it probably was not, but the earlier you get things checked the better.
One doctor said I have cystic breasts, but the other laughed and said everyone does. The (second) doctor asked if I ate caffeine and drank diet soda, and at the time I was eating and drinking a lot more of it—a few brownies a week, and diet soda at least one can a day, and I was drinking lots of coffee because i was staying up late. She said to cut down. I asked, "Do I have to eliminate it?" and she said, "You have to find the right balance for yourself." She also suggested I take 400-800mg of vitamin E. It was way above the RDA so I asked about it and she said they haven't found that it's hazardous, and it also helps prevent heart disease.
