First, says Dr. Gerber, don't have the procedure done if your breasts are still growing. If your bra size has changed over the past year, wait awhile until you're sure your breasts have stopped growing before having the surgery—that is, unless you're willing to risk having a second operation when your breasts regrow. Also be aware that weight loss and, more important, weight gain will affect your surgical outcome. If you gain, say, ten pounds after having the surgery performed, your breasts will likely get bigger. Another caveat: Birth control pills often put weight on the breasts—not just water, but actual breast tissue, Dr. Gerber notes. Consider all of these lifestyle factors before you have surgery done so you can more appropriately plan for the size of your new breasts. Choosing a new breast size can be tricky. If you've always hated extremely large breasts, you may be tempted to go for the other end of the scale and ask for a dramatic reduction. Keep in mind that tiny breasts may not look proportional on your body. If your hips are wide, or your stomach protrudes, an A-cup might look just as displeasing to you as your double D-cup looked before surgery. Look at before-and-after pictures of women who have had the procedure done, talk to your doctor about your goals for breast reduction (feeling less pain, participating in a sport, wearing a certain type of clothing, avoiding ridicule, or whatever else) and try to make a decision based on reason rather than on passion. *228/162/1* General health |
