BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS, ALSO CALLED GARDNERELLA VAGINITIS, "GARDEN VARIETY" VAGINITIS, HEMOPHILUS VAGINITIS, NONSPECIFIC VAGINITIS, GARDNERELLA, GARDNERELLA VAGINALIS, AND OTHER NAMES Perhaps half of cases of irritated vulvas are caused by this common infection. It goes by a number of related names, partly because for many years doctors weren't sure what organism was actually causing the discomfort. In fact, even today, rather than actually doing a culture to see what organism is bothering you, some health care professionals will settle for the generic "nonspecific vaginitis" theory and give you nonspecific, generic treatment. While generally this isn't a great plan of action against an organism in your reproductive tract, with this problem, there are certain clues that your doctor can hardly miss—such as the strong, fishy odor caused by this infection, and the yellowish, thin discharge that is usually associated with it. While some women have no symptoms with Gardnerella, some feel itching and burning not unlike that caused by yeast infections. Also, like yeast, the hemophilus bacterium thrives in a warm, damp arena, so an overheated vagina with trapped moisture is more prone to the problem. Where do you get the infection in the first place? Sex is one route—and you can pass it back and forth between yourself and your partner. Other routes (from the toilet seat to the bathtub) are plausible, but certainly not as "efficient" a route of transmission. With bacterial vaginosis, the amount of lac-tobacilli (that normal vaginal flora mentioned earlier) drops significantly and no longer protects us from other bacteria that are normally around our vaginas—but well controlled.
