PREVENTING CYSTITIS – PART 2

• When you haven't had sex for a while—or if you're having relatively rough sex—be sure to lubricate properly, so you don't abrade your skin excessively. Don't make the mistake of using sticky or goopy lubricants that can clog your pores and cause further irritation, however.

• Ideally, have sex when both your own and your partner's genitals are clean.

• Try to urinate after intercourse. It helps clear away any unwanted E. coli bugs that might be trying to get hold. Dr. Bavendam says it's not necessary to jump right up after sex and go to the bathroom; waiting an hour or so is fine. Just try not to go to sleep for the night without emptying your bladder. Obviously, if you have intercourse

on an empty bladder, you won't be able to urinate afterwards. If you need to urinate before intercourse, Dr. Bavendam suggests trying to keep a little urine in your bladder—although this can be a bit uncomfortable.

• Take note if the form of contraception you use seems to trigger urinary tract infections. Some women find that spermicidal jellies and/or the diaphragm can help promote cystitis. If this is true for you, try switching to another form of contraception and see if you have fewer episodes.

• If you are doing everything right and can't seem to prevent urinary tract infections, talk to your regular doctor or to a urologist. It's not good for your kidneys to endure chronic infections in the urinary tract. You may be a candidate for preventive antibiotic therapy, in which you'll take an antibiotic whenever you have sex—or on some other regular schedule. Because there are risks to taking antibiotics over the long term, don't initiate this treatment on your own with leftover antibiotics in your medicine cabinet. Ask your doctor for advice . . . and supervision.
