There are options to hysterectomy that often resolve the problems listed above. To name just a few. Medication, usually hormone therapy, can be used to control or regulate abnormal vaginal bleeding in some cases. (Always find out the root cause of the bleeding, of course.) Sometimes simple birth control pills can put erratic or heavy bleeding back on a more normal cycle. Endometrial ablation is another technique that can be used to stop uterine bleeding; with this procedure, an electric current is run with a special device to clear away the uterine lining, making the uterus nonfunctional but leaving the physical body of the uterus in place—which some women find preferable to a hysterectomy. This procedure cures bleeding about half the time, while another quarter of patients are somewhat relieved, and the final quarter continue to bleed heavily. A traditional D & C (dilation and curettage) can be used to treat emergency vaginal bleeding, though it is not used for routine control of bleeding.
