PMS: WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT - JUDI, 44 YEARS OLD My family said even when I was in high school they could see when I was getting my period, but I didn't know it. It peaked about age 40-41. When I saw it interfering with my work, I knew it was something I had to deal with. I was very short, my coping skills were low. I work as a high school counselor, this is my 21 st year. I'd get real chills, bad diarrhea, a cold sweat and horrible cramps. Combination vitamins really helped with the physical—I still take a B-complex vitamin, and a regular multivitamin and calcium. Five days before my period is always the worst. I'd feel out of control, fearful of what I would say next. I'd get mad, fuming about little things that would never bother me the other 29 days of the month. It was like being outside of myself looking down. Somehow you feel justified being this angry at something that small. Such self-humiliation: I don't know—God forbid—what I'll do in that state, not physically, but what I might say to someone. Mad for no clear reason. Anything will tip me off. I would cry easily, feel very ugly, insecure and then on the second day of my period I again felt normal. My biggest problem is being on overload, taking on too much, so now in the week before my period it's "say no to people." About four years ago I decided to see a PMS expert. Is this all in my head? I wanted validation that these behaviors were something to do with my hormones and menstruation. We looked at all the options—the first was to eliminate foods. I craved, chocolate, caffeine, coffee, and eat lots of green vegetables instead. I felt fabulous. I was fearful of Xanax, we decided on a very small amount. I've discovered I need to take it before I get anxious or I won't realize that I'm escalating. *338/162/1* General health |
