HOT FLASHES: SENSATIONS AND SOLUTIONS - INTRODUCTION
You'll find data that anywhere from 28% to 94% of women have hot flashes in the years before during and slightly after menopause. The most quoted figure is about 75%. This doesn't mean that 1/4 of women will seek treatment for hot flashes, or that this number of women are even bothered by them; it just means that they occur. Margaret Lock, a medical anthropologist at McGill University, has studied the menopausal experience in different countries and has found, for example, that while hot flashes are quite common in the U.S. and other Western countries, they are quite uncommon in Japan. Lock also reports that women in Japan treat menopause with much less apprehension and disturbance than many American women do. Indonesian women also report fewer hot flashes than do Westerners.
Women often describe hot flashes as sudden bursts of heat that overcome their bodies, especially their upper bodies—the chest, neck and face. These areas may become quite red or blotchy as the heat builds, and finally after climbing to a peak, the sensation fades and is often replaced by a chilled feeling. The entire experience usually lasts for several minutes, but according to the National Institute on Aging, some hot flashes last 30 minutes!
