SPERMICIDES (FOAMS, JELLIES, CREAMS, SUPPOSITORIES, FILM SHEETS) Under 2% of women at risk of unintended pregnancy use spermicides alone as a form of birth control. But many more women use these agents in combination with other forms of contraception, such as the diaphragm, the cervical cap, condoms and so on. Spermicides don't provide excellent protection on their own, although they're a lot better in "perfect" use than in "typical" use. If you follow directions carefully— shaking the foam can vigorously before use, applying a new applicatorful for repeat intercourse if required, etc., you're more likely to get good results. When used with another form of contraception, spermicides make excellent backups for additional protection (in fact, the diaphragm and cervical cap should only be used with spermicide in order to be effective). Keep in mind that while a small number of women—or their partners—are sensitive to or allergic to the spermicidal agent in a given product, sometimes switching to another brand or another form (cream to jelly, or foam to cream) can make you more comfortable.
