WOMEN'S USE OF HEALTH CARE (RESULT) The result of putting our health needs last? We're at considerable risk of falling prey to detectable and preventable diseases. The Commonwealth Fund report found that 44% of women over 50 failed to get mammograms to detect breast cancer in the last year; one in three women failed to have Pap tests for cancer of the cervix, general pelvic exams for gynecological health or clinical breast exams by a doctor. Of course, not all of this is our own "fault" for failing to seek medical care. The same report found that one in four of the women who failed to get mammograms said they were never instructed to do so by their doctors! Another important result of inadequate health care and research for women is wasted dollars. According to the Society for the Advancement of Women's Health Research, we spend 6 billion dollars a year on breast cancer, 10 billion dollars a year on osteoporosis, another 10 biUion on incontinence, and a staggering 237 billion dollars a year on depression (which affects women twice as often as men). Most experts agree that we'd spend only a fraction of this kind of money if we understood more about how to prevent these conditions, instead of waiting for the high costs of severe disability and critical care once medical problems have become advanced.
