Let your doctor know how you feel about him/her. Dr. Thomas Inui, chairman of the department of ambulatory care and prevention at Harvard Medical School and at the Harvard Community Health Plan, tells patients to let doctors know what's good and what's bad about their treatment style. He's amazed at the number of patients who complain about doctors to friends, but never in fact confront the clinicians with their negative feelings. Without feedback, doctors aren't going to change. If you like many things about your doctor, but are unhappy with a certain aspect of your care, speak up! For instance, don't hestitate to tell a doctor that you're unhappy with the fact that your last two appointments have been rushed. Perhaps there is a better day of the week, or a better time of day on which to schedule appointments. Or maybe you don't like the fact that the doctor didn't consult you about your treatment plan. In a positive way, let him/her know!
