YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - RECOGNIZING PROBLEMS Any swelling, redness, irritation, discharge, change of color, lump, bump, mole or other unusual mark in the vulvar area should be examined by a doctor. It may be nothing at all, but better safe than sorry. Once you are aware of your anatomy and can precisely describe to your doctor what you're feeling or what you're worried about, you can be a tremendous help in getting to the bottom of a problem. In the past, you may have told your gynecologist, "I feel some pain in my vagina." After reading this section, you're now aware that that was a lot like saying, "I have a pain in my leg"; it gives your doctor very little information. Being able to say exactly where the pain, or the source of worry, is ("I have a sore spot on the right side of the inner lip of my vagina") adds a lot to the diagnostic process. Sometimes, your doctor will take a biopsy—a sample of tissue from the troublesome spot—and have it examined in a laboratory. In other cases she'll just take a careful look at the area, and, depending on whether there's a problem, she may be able to prescribe medication to relieve your specific discomfort. You can also look for signs of sexually transmitted disease. While many cases are symptom-free in women, you may find discharge from either the urethral or the vaginal openings (now that you know where those are!). Sometimes sores— either reddened bumps or actual crusted pimple-like lesions—will be visible. Some vaginal warts are easy to see—they may be white and large or consist of tiny little bumps. Others are invisible, which is why screening by your doctor is so important. She may put a vinegar solution on your vulva or inside your vagina and reexamine the area with a microscope: the vinegar "lights up" potentially hidden trouble spots in cases like human papillomavirus (the virus that causes genital warts). *94/162/1* General health |
