YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - INTERNAL GENITAL ANATOMY (INTRODUCTION)
Now let's take a look inside: You won't be able to do this in the mirror by yourself, but you can do it with a mirror at your doctor's office, when a speculum—a tool used to open your vagina so the doctor can get a better look—is inserted.
Your vagina is like a tunnel, in some respects: the illustration below shows the inside of the vaginal walls, which are formed of mucous membrane—very delicate tissue. At the "end" of the vagina on the inside is your cervix—the gateway between your vagina and your uterus. Some call it the neck of the uterus, others, the mouth of the uterus. Not everyone's cervix looks alike—there are variations, like those in the illustration at top right.
Beyond the cervix, neither you nor your doctor can see from the outside. Your reproductive organs are tucked inside your pelvis; the only access to them is through the vagina and cervix. So at this point, follow along with the illustrations and you'll get a good idea of what's going on inside your body.
