YOUR BODY, INSIDE AND OUT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY - FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD (BUNIONS)
Here are some of the common problems that arise—and some solutions for them—when we abuse our feet:
Bunions
Those big, tender bumps on the sides of your big toes, the drift of your big toes toward your other toes—those are bunions, among the most common foot problems in women. The bunion, which refers to the bump itself and comes from the Latin word for turnip, affects 54% of American women, according to Dr. Frey's research. Only 10% of men have the problem. Not all bunions hurt, but some can be extremely painful. They can also grow so large it's almost impossible to find shoes that fit. To blame are shoes that are tight and narrow in the toe box. High heels worsen the pressure.
Solutions: If your bunions don't hurt and aren't making life difficult in any way, there's no need for invasive procedures. Switch to shoes MBth a wide instep, ample room in the toe area—width is the key—and, if you have a bit of discomfort, pads inside your shoes may help.
Exercises can also help. Dr. Frey finds: stretch your big toe in the opposite direction from where it's drifting—that is, away from the other toes. These stretches probably won't reverse pain or deformity, but they can help you if your bunions are in an early stage.
