What to do about SPFs? Even though this guideline has been around for years, many people still don't understand what it means. An SPF of 15 means that if it would take you 10 minutes to get a sunburn without protection, this lotion will multiply that time by 15(10 minutes x 15 SPF = 150 minutes or two and a half hours before you burn). Is a higher SPF always better? Up to a point, yes. But keep in mind that there's no such thing as a total sunblock. While sunscreens with an SPF of 15 block 93% of the sun's rays, one with an SPF of 35 blocks just 97%—an improvement, but certainly not doubly good. Because you get so little bang for your buck once you're over the 15 SPF level, there are some who think the highest SPF lotions—now at 50 SPF—can be a bit of overkill. Finally, remember to choose sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays, since scientists now know that both kinds of ultraviolet rays cause cancer and premature aging.
