THE WORST OFFENDERS FRAGRANCES - LANOLIN; PROPYLENE GLYCOL
Found in many moisturizers, lanolin is usually not too bothersome to healthy skin but some people get irritation reactions from it—such as red, itchy eyes.
Propylene Glycol
This chemical is commonly found in moisturizers. It causes about 5% of all cosmetic reactions—usually in the form of skin irritations or contact dermatitis.
Assorted Others
Some ingredients that promise to help the skin, such as aloe and vitamin E, can also cause skin problems. The fact is, you don't even get enough aloe in most of these products to do you any good (the concentration in the plant is about 20%, in the products, 3-5%). So experts' best advice is to keep it simple—the more fancy ingredients, the greater your chance of having a problem with one of them. You may also react to unexpected items like elastic hair bands, or nickel in earrings, for example. Let your dermatologist look at your irritation and help you figure out the cause. Other products that cause irritation more often than allergic reactions are antiperspirants and deodorants. Sometimes friction in the armpit combined with the aluminum salts many of these products contain can cause irritation. Also, the fragrances in some of these products can cause irritations.
